Most HOAs require architectural review approval for any visible exterior change to your property. This includes fences, decks, sheds, paint colors, roofing materials, solar panels, major landscaping changes, and more.
The specific requirements are outlined in your CC&Rs (Covenants, Conditions, and Restrictions) — the legal document that came with your home purchase. If you cannot find your CC&Rs, request a copy from your HOA board or management company.
When in doubt, submit an ARC application. Building without approval can result in fines, mandatory removal of your project, and liens on your property.
